Alternative methods for education are in full bloom nowadays, what with the fast-paced developments in technology which provided for more interaction in less time, over great distances. It seems natural that every aspect of human development takes a seat on the bandwagon of progress. Sure enough, those who want to take on a college or certificate course can now take advantage of the internet’s offerings, by applying for a correspondence course.
Correspondence courses, also known in similar terms such as distance and online learning, enable a student to take part in instruction which is at the same time similar and different to that found in a typical classroom. The classroom setting involved in a correspondence course is usually situated online; that is, the student joins an entire class, in an internet-based instruction, provided by an online instructor. This arrangement is made possible by numerous programs made to serve such a purpose; interaction is done through online chatroom conversations, with the instructor acting as a moderator, it may be done by voice and online webcams, or by simple text messages passed along a communal message board, which is updated as soon as the next message pops up onscreen. This convenient set-up breaks geographic boundaries altogether, as the instructor and the students can take the class from virtually any area which has means of access for such an activity.
Examinations and evaluations may also be done with the use of the same medium, or it may be done by occasional on-site, communal paper-and-pencil exams, administered by a proctor on an established location. This arrangement may also be opted for to suffice the need for face-to-face or oral examinations, as well as laboratory work which requires the employment of specific tools and equipment. Correspondence courses which take advantage of both classroom and online instruction are referred to as hybrids, offering the best which both methods have to offer.
Sometimes correspondence courses are confused with homeschooling; this is understandable, since the two are very much alike, that interchanging the two terms seems natural. There are significant differences between the two, however; for one thing, correspondence courses afford the student with full autonomy in the learning process, while in homeschooling, the student is usually supervised, either by a guardian, parent, or personal tutor. With correspondence courses, the student is not entirely removed from the classroom; only the arrangement for holding classes has been changed. Homeschooling necessitates personal instruction, thereby requiring the student to be separated from traditional classroom instruction, at least for the time being. Probably the biggest difference between the two is the number of available courses which are offered to the student. Correspondence courses afford the student with virtually every available program under the sun, from associate to bachelor’s degrees, to postgraduate degrees and certificate programs, you name it. Homeschooling is a personalized endeavor; consequently the programs are more geared towards developing the student’s basic proficiencies to maximum potential. Correspondence courses are actually a complementing option for homeschooling; parents may take advantage of specific course offerings, in order to address insufficiencies in learning areas which the parent or guardian cannot properly manage by themselves. In this sense, distance learning is a step above the homeschooling alternative, as it can provide solutions in aid to the specific needs of the latter.
